The Business Intelligence Journal:
featuring the SRC and VF case study

Geographic business intelligence® is a collection of technology tools, applications and solutions that solve a variety of information-driven business problems. The retail industry is well versed in dealing with the most complex data problems when analyzing customers, targeted markets, and distribution channels.

To gain the most accurate insight, the retail industry relies on the study of geo-demographics to study how cities and neighborhoods evolve and are characterized. The role of a geo-demographer is to understand the demographic and geographic relationships, with the goal of putting the right product on the right floors at the right time, says Andy Moncla, Manager of geo-demographic information at VF Corp.

With geographic business intelligence® technology tools, proactive decisions can be made by running detailed geographical analyses on demographics and lifestyle information about residents in the areas around a store before they even open.

About The Firm ( http://www.extendthereach.com/ )

SRC began exploring the concept of online demographic reporting and mapping shortly after the company was founded in 1997 by Dean Stoecker, Libby Duane-Adams and Ned Harding, three industry players who were determined to alter the way companies store, manage and retrieve geographic information to drive business answers with intelligence. They were committed to developing software solutions that enable fact-based decision-making by delivering comprehensive data access and analysis with unparalleled performance.

During that year, SRC partnered with its first client, Market Statistics, to develop the Survey of Buying Power Online, the first online data engine for delivering demographic-based mapping and reporting solutions.

Thomson Newspapers later installed SRC’s technology on its intranet as the first Web-based advertising, sales, circulation and marketing application. Parent company Thomson Corp. soon bought a minority stake in SRC.

SRC advanced its innovative approach to demographics in 1998 with the development of Allocate™, an application designed to handle data in both Web-centric and desktop environments.  By incorporating U.S. Census data into Allocate, SRC spawned FreeDemographics.com, which has become the most popular site on the Web for Census research, other than the Census Bureau’s own site, and the most popular software-as-a-service platform supporting geographic strategy and solutions for businesses.

That same year, SRC developed another technology called Solocast™, which allowed companies to gain a better understanding of their customers through consumer segmentation. For example, Experian uses Solocast for consumer profiling and to better understand the nature of segmentation in the marketplace.

SRC won a 1999 bid to be the technology provider for the Census Bureau’s 2000 Census data and, with Allocate, became the first private-sector technology company to deliver Census information.  The Census Bureau still uses Allocate today, enabling it to reduce the number of CDs it ships in response to a request for Census data from some 300 to just 5, or on a single DVD.

By 2001, SRC had introduced its Portfolio Desktop suite and Portfolio Web architecture.  The suite grew to include Allocate, Solocast and SRC’s StreetWare™ application.

In 2002, SRC introduced a technology called Explorer that allows companies to assign spatial coordinates—latitude and longitude—to its databases of customer addresses, stores and sales territories. Explorer now serves as the first open-source foundation for a worldwide spatial-coordinates database. In that same year, Time named DemographicsNow.com one of the top Web applications for businesses.

SRC released Alteryx™ in 2005, offering a single, unified spatial and non-spatial data analysis environment for building geographic business intelligence applications. The software allows quick and easy conversion of information from disparate databases, streamlines the spatial analysis of massive data inputs, and produces interactive views or published reports using maps, charts, tables and graphs to answer complex business queries quickly and directly.

SRC was designated an Inc. 5000 company in 2007 and 2008 and most recently was included on the Orange County Business Journal’s “Fastest Growing Private Companies” list. Today, with clients like YUM! Brands, Ford Motor Company, AT&T Mobility, Comcast, and Marcus & Millichap, SRC is a projected $20 million business with nearly 70 employees.
