
Stock markets bolted higher on the first day of trading of 2010 as a new report showed that manufacturing activity rose for a fifth month, an indication that the economy continued to recover despite jitters in the housing market.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose more than 161 points or 1.5 percent by late morning, and the broader Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index was up about 1.6 percent, amplifying earlier gains in markets in Europe and Asia.
